Story in brief

Aston Villa fell to defeat at Molineux after a hard-fought Premier League encounter.

A moment of quality from Ruben Neves was all that separated the two sides in the first half, with the Portuguese midfielder firing home just before half-time.

The visitors struggled to find their feet in the first half after losing Jed Steer to an injury in the sixth minute, but Dean Smith’s side improved after the break and saw several chances to equalise come and go.

But just as they sensed a leveller was on the way, Raul Jimenez finished off a counter attack to put the home side two up.

Trezeguet netted for the second game in succession to set up a grandstand finish in injury time, but it wasn't enough for Villa.

Keeping the faith

One of the positives to emerge from a disappointing afternoon is how well Villa are served in the goalkeeper department.

Orjan Nyland hadn’t played a first-team game for more than ten months, and he travelled to Molineux expecting no more than to watch from the subs bench as Jed Steer stood in for the injured Tom Heaton.

But the Norwegian keeper was forced into action after just seven minutes when Steer fell awkwardly while stretching for a dipping cross, and he certainly didn’t let the side down.

He looked comfortable, and certainly couldn’t be faulted with either of Wolves’ goals.

He also made and one excellent reflex save as well as dealing competently with most of the home sides attacks and distributing the ball intelligently.

We will remember them

There was another fitting tribute at Molineux to those who lost their lives while fighting for their country.

Representatives of the Armed Forces were applauded onto the pitch before Wolves and Villa supporters joined forces in a perfectly observed minute’s silence as a bugler played The Last Post.

Next up

After the international break, Monday Night Football at Villa Park beckons as Smith’s side take on Newcastle United.

Under the lights, Villa will be looking to take maximum points in front of their home fans on 25th November (8pm KO).
